ASSOCHAM Foundation for Inclusive Growth of SC & ST Objectives | Preamble | Code of Conduct Established in 1920, The Associated Chambers of Commerce & Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) is the oldest apex chamber of commerce in the country. Since its inception it has not only been serving the cause of development of industry & commerce but also contributing to the policy making exercises relating to social infrastructure such as education, health, etc. It has also launched field projects from time to time in these areas. Keeping up with this tradition, ASSOCHAM has responded proactively and enthusiastically to the call given by the Honble Prime Minister of India to the private sector for enhancing the employment of SC & ST persons in the private jobs. Jointly with another apex Chamber, it intensively debated the contours of the initiatives that could be taken up to fulfill the expectations. The document entitled Concrete Steps by Indian Industry on Inclusiveness for SC & ST was submitted to the Honble Prime Minister in 2006. This document also lays down the actions to be taken up by the Chamber in an institutionalized manner as also the Code of Conduct to be adopted by the individual private sector enterprises. ASSOCHAM has initiated the implementation process in all earnest. The Chamber is currently in the process of encouraging the other regional apex chambers to work for adoption of the Code by their constituent members. ASSOCHAM has also taken up a number of initiatives. It is operating a scheme at Kanpur, which has so far trained more than a 1000 persons of backward castes and made them employable. In collaboration with a reputed academic institution, the Chamber has launched a scheme for awarding scholarships to 300 girl students of SC & ST communities for taking up MBA course every year. Earlier this year, the Chamber forged an alliance with ANARDE Foundation, an institution which has been making very genuine and result oriented efforts to not only help the tribal people in becoming self reliant or employable but also for removing the basic constraints at the very local level that have been causing the poverty and backwardness in the first place. Joint projects are being formulated for in accordance with the Action Plan with All- India coverage in mind. The corporate members of the Chambers are being constantly encouraged to absorb the SC & ST candidates. It may be appreciated that this is an enormous challenge, in view of the sheer size and complexities that characterize our country. Our experience so far has led us to conclude that the efforts have to be made in a very systematized and focused manner after thoroughly analyzing the demand and supply factors for manpower in different sectors at specific, strategically chosen locations. In order to further boost our capabilities for doing so, ASSOCHAM is setting up a separate Trust under its aegis ASSOCHAM Foundation for Inclusive Growth of SC&ST.
