Railways occupy a unique and crucial place in the country‘s transport infrastructure.
Indian Railways is 12 times more energy-efficient in freight traffic, 3 times more in passenger traffic and much-more environment friendly compared to Roadways. It is the lifeline of our nation, having the potential to contribute around 3% of India's GDP. Indian Railways is poised to become the world's biggest potential market for introduction and deployment of state-of-art technologies and solutions from around the globe.

The Indian Railways has been investing significantly to enhance safety, augment the speed of trains, improve freight efficiency, enhance passenger amenities, and ensure better connectivity. To remain competitive vis-à-vis other transportation modes, there is an urgent need to upgrade and expand the railway infrastructure. It is thus important to engage the private sector to bring more funds and efficiency, thereby enhancing railway infrastructure. It is estimated that Indian Railways would need Capital investment of around 50 lakh crore upto 2030 for network expansion and capacity augmentation, rolling stock induction and other modernization works to enable better delivery of passenger and freight services and to improve its modal share in transport. To bridge the gap in capital funding and to induct modern technologies and improve efficiencies, it is being planned to use Public Private Partnership (PPP) model for few initiatives.

This Council focuses on identifying opportunities and challenges in the sector for which regular discussions are organized on every key aspect of the Railways. The Council is working closely with Government and creating awareness among the industry on key developments taking place and also giving industry inputs to the Government for policy and regulatory reforms towards modernization of Indian Railways both in passenger and freight transportation operations and bringing ease of doing business with Railways.
