National Council on Direct Selling

The world economy is extremely unstable at this stage and the growth prospects across the economies have weakened. However, with the progressive and proactive initiatives taken by the Government, India stands as one of the most attractive investment destinations in the world. In this process several organizations have tried to reach out to this ever expanding market through different channels of distribution and marketing. Direct selling is one such alternate distribution channel which is rapidly picking up pace in the country. Today it is practiced in more than 100 countries and has a status of a global industry with a market size of US$ 180 billion. In 2008 the direct selling industry in India was US$ 0.6 billion and in 2016 it rose to US$ 2.4 billion. The Indian Direct selling industry is a rapidly emerging and steadily growing as an alternative sales distribution channel and boosting self employment.
India has great potential to be a thriving market for Direct Selling and can become an investment destination for Direct Selling Companies. This would, however, require unveiling of proactive industry friendly policies by the Government.  The guidelines issued by the Department of Consumer Affairs have been of great help to the industry. However, while the Direct Selling Industry offers ample opportunities for creating entrepreneurs, there are many issues of the industry which are yet to be resolved.
Keeping in view the challenges and emerging growth prospects of Direct Selling Industry and its increasing role in Self Reliant India, ASSOCHAM’s National Council on Direct Selling presents views of the Industry to the Central and State Governments. The council focuses on a dialogue between Government and all stakeholders on the ease of doing business which will bring about paradigm changes for the Industry in India.
