Bad loans of Indian banks are rising as a result of slowdown in business and the slow pace of economic recovery. The gross non-performing assets (NPAs) of banks could be around 5% of the total loans in the banking system by the end of financial year 2013-14.

Sluggish economic growth, rising raw material prices, diminishing demand, policy bottlenecks are some of the major reasons forcing the corporate to default on their debts. The increasing number of such cases is putting immense pressure on the financial health of the banks. The industry and trade is feeling apprehensive of its impact on their bottom- lines and is keen to share its concerns both with the Banking sector and the rating agencies. The presence of Dy Governor, RBI will provide desired opportunities to the Industry and Trade to put-forward their concerns and seek their answers.  The rising non-performing asset of banks as well as other lenders is a cause of concern and needs a very deft and mature handling. Credit Rating Agencies have an important role to play in designing some new business approaches. Hence, some brain storming on efficacy of ratings, accountability & transparency of credit rating agencies may lead us to some options.
