Kerala has been a major exporter of spices, cashew, marine products, tea and coffee etc. The state accounts for nearly 20% of country’s food exports. Home to more than 1300 food processing units, Kerala has made promising growth in Agro and Food processing sector. Kerala’s food processing industry being one of the key sectors contributing to the state’s GDP, accounts for about two-thirds of its export income and has the potential to grow six times bigger industry.

The food processing sector in Kerala requires technology up-gradation to tap global markets as well as strengthening its position in domestic market. However, the benefit of technology-up-gradation and financial incentives can only be accrued if food marketing links are strengthened including the value chain especially food growers, processors, wholesalers, retailers, and foodservice establishments.
