Maritime Transport is a critical infrastructure for the social and economic development of a country. Shipping industry is one of the most globalised industries operating in a highly competitive business environment and is, thus, intricately linked to the world economy and trade. The shipping industry must be enabled to carry higher shares of the sea-borne trade in indigenous bottoms. The capacity of the ports in terms of their berths and cargo handling equipment needs to keep pace with the growing requirements of the overseas trade.

Ports play a vital role in the overall economic development of the country. About 90% by volume and 70% by Value of the country’s international trade is carried on through maritime transport. Development of India’s ports and trade related infrastructure will continue to be critical to sustain the success of accelerated growth in the Indian economy.

In the Maritime Agenda, the Ministry of Shipping has set a target of 3,130 MT port capacities for the year 2020. The objective of the Maritime agenda is not only creating more capacity but augmenting port performance. Most of this investment has to come from the private sector including foreign direct investment (FDI). However, various risks such as policy implementation, land acquisition, Planning, Design, Approval, Traffic, Financial, Technology, Political, Construction & Environment risk factors are affecting the PPP infrastructure projects in ports.

In view of these significant developments in the Shipping and Ports sector, ASSOCHAM is organizing a “National Conference on SHIPPING & PORTS @ 2020” at 9:30 am on March 18, 2015 at Hotel Le-Meridien, New Delhi. Shri Nitin Gadkari, Hon’ble Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport & Highways and Shri Rajive Kumar, Secretary, Ministry of Shipping has very kindly agreed to address the participants in the Inaugural Session of the conference.
