Karnataka is one amongst the industrially developed States in the Country. The State has all potential to stand out on the fore front and has been focusing on development of industries. Further, the State is endowed with rich natural resources across the State and such resources need to be optimally utilized for the benefit of local people. Value addition to resources is one of the ways of optimizing the wealth available locally.

However, off late the growth of mining and associated manufacturing has been hurt due to sudden drop in Mining activities in the year 2012-13 after the order of Hon'ble Supreme Court to curb the illegal mining activities. The drop in Mineral production also put a brake on all the future projects of mineral and mineral based industries in theState. This has also affected the growth of other ancillary Industries/Manufacturing, based on this metal industry.

Even after the resumption of mining activities the production in Karnataka has not increased to the level of production cap of 30 Mn tons, as imposed by Hon'ble Supreme Court. However after the introduction of Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2015, this has given new hope to the ailing Mining Sector and Iron and Steel Industry in the State. The process of auction for allotment would usher in greater transparency and boost revenues for the States. The new Act not only opens the gate of new opportunity for the Mining Industry by bring back the investment in the Mining and Metal Industries which has been kept in abeyance because of uncertain economic environment.

In order to discuss opportunities and challenges as existing in the Mining Sector in the state of Karnataka, ASSOCHAM is organizing a Conference on “Mining in Karnataka” on 19th June 2015 in Bangalore.
