India is having one of the largest road networks of over 46.99 lakh km. It comprises National Highways, Expressways, State Highways, Major District Roads, Other District Roads and Village Roads. Roads in India transport over 60 per cent of all goods and 90 per cent of total passenger traffic. The roads and bridge infrastructure industry is expected to be worth US$ 19.2 billion by FY17.
Highways Sector is critical for emerging economies like India, due to existing infrastructure gaps and enhanced transportation requirements. The capacity of National Highways in term of handling traffic passenger and goods needs to be in keeping pace with the industrial growth. The National Highways account for 1.9 per cent of the total road network in India and are expected to reach 100,000 kms by the end of the 2017. Sustainable roads and road safety need to be integrated in all phases of planning, design, and operation of road infrastructure. Road safety management capacity, road infrastructure and enforcement of traffic safety regulations have not kept pace with the development. New technologies and value engineering can play major role in making Roads and Highways sustainable and safe.
Therefore, with the objective of discussing various issues and opportunities in Roads and Highways sector, ASSOCHAM is organizing a National Conference on “Sustainable Roads and Highways – Role of New Technologies & Value Engineering in Construction, Maintenance & Safety” at 09:30 AM on October 09, 2015 at Hotel Le-Meridien, New Delhi. We have invited Shri Nitin Jairam Gadkari, Hon’ble Union Minister for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping to address the participants at the Conference. The conference will be attended by large number of national and international stakeholders and will focus on making Roads and Highways sustainable.
