Introduction

Steel Industry in India as one of the fastest growing steel producing nations has been passing through a difficult phase for some time due to rising import. Indian steel industry has faced oversupply and below cost production prices,  Tough market conditions saw a drop in capacity utilization for many of its integrated steel plants.

The Government has been sensitive to the current plight of the steel industry and has undertaken steps like imposing anti-dumping duty, safeguard duty on imported steel products and policy initiative on minimum import price.  Many of the other medium and large steel units are facing liquidity challenges affecting their plant operations.  Most of the steel companies both in public sector as well as private sector are facing challenges in servicing its payment obligation to the lenders.  Hence a pragmatic solution is required to address the situation.

In the light of the above, ASSOCHAM is organizing “10th India Steel Summit” to be held on 9th December 2016 in Bhubaneswar.  The objective of the Summit is to discuss the factors impacting the growth of steel sector in the country and evolve implementable solution.
