India accounts for nearly one-third of the total world demand for Gold. The Gems and Jewellery sector plays a significant role in the Indian economy, contributing around 6-7 per cent of the country’s GDP. India is deemed to be the hub of the global jewellery market because of its low costs and availability of high-skilled labour. According to a report by Research & Markets, the jewellery market in India is expected to grow at a Compounded Annual Growth Rate of 15.95 per cent over the period 2014-2019. The market size of this sector is about USD 60 billion as of 2017 which is expected to reach USD 110 billion by 2022.
At more than 24,000 tonnes, Indian households hold the largest stock of gold in the world. The Government recognizes that the development of gold market will provide a stimulus to exports, economic growth and employment. Therefore, the Govt. of India has launched the Gold Monetisation Scheme and Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme and implemented hallmarking scheme to protect the consumer in purchasing gold jewellery of requisite purity, develop export competitiveness and make India a leading market for gold jewellery in the world. However, for India to become a world trading superpower, there is a need for greater involvement of trade and industry with suitable Government initiatives.
Therefore, in order to discuss these aspects further for spreading better understanding of the Gold Industry, ASSOCHAM is organizing 11th International Gold Summit at 9:30 a.m. on September 19, 2018 at Shangri-La's Eros Hotel in New Delhi.
