India faces major environmental challenges associated with waste generation and inadequate waste collection, transport, treatment and disposal. Current systems in India are not able to cope with the volumes of waste generated by an increasing urban population, and this impacts on the environment and public health. The challenges and barriers are significant, but so are the opportunities.
Solid waste management (SWM) is a major problem for many urban local bodies (ULBs) in India, where urbanization, industrialization and economic growth have resulted in increased municipal solid waste (MSW) generation per person. Effective SWM is a major challenge in cities with high population density. Achieving sustainable development within a country experiencing rapid population growth and improvements in living standards is made more difficult in India because it is a diverse country with many different religious groups, cultures and traditions.
India needs to have a strong commitment on waste management with concerted efforts from all stakeholders including policy-makers, bureaucracy, industry and the people. As Government of India focuses on building “Smarter Cities” and “Swachh Bharat Mission”, several measures need to be undertaken to propel India towards being a sustainable economy. In view of this, ASSOCHAM is organizing “National Conference-cum-Exhibition & Awards on Managing Urban Waste” in New Delhi on January 10, 2019 at India Habitat Centre. The Conference will be a key event to drive the uptake of necessary technologies and innovations to accelerate waste management scenario in India, to understand the inter-related policy, technological and operational barriers and promote various stakeholder collaboration for streamlined action.
