Agriculture is the primary source of livelihood for about 58 per cent of India’s population. Gross Value Added by agriculture, forestry and fishing is estimated at Rs 18.53 trillion (US$ 271.00 billion) in FY18.
India is expected to achieve the ambitious goal of doubling farm income by 2022. The agriculture sector in India is expected to generate better momentum in the next few years due to increased investments in agricultural infrastructure such as irrigation facilities, warehousing and cold storage. Furthermore, the growing use of genetically modified crops will likely improve the yield for Indian farmers. India is expected to be self-sufficient in pulses in the coming few years due to concerted efforts of scientists to get early-maturing varieties of pulses and the increase in minimum support price.
Taking this initiative forward, ASSOCHAM proposes to hold a “Conference on Indian Agriculture – Agenda for Inclusive Growth” which is scheduled to be held in September 19, 2019 in New Delhi. Keeping in mind, this conference will be organized to promote investments in agri and allied sectors, enhancing “Make in India” initiative and Exports, boosting Research and Development in agri sector, reducing post harvest losses effectively, opportunities in irrigation and also to promote business potentials in this sector.
It will also provide a platform for national and international stakeholders, representatives from union and state governments, investors, policy makers, industry leaders, trade bodies & associations agro technologists, agri experts to share their expertise in this area. The highlight of the conference is to brainstorm on various actionable ideas for development of agriculture sector in India.
