Indian Railways is 12 times more energy-efficient in freight traffic, 3 times more in passenger traffic and much-more environment friendly compared to Roadways. It is the lifeline of our nation, having the potential to contribute around 3% of India's GDP. Though, Modernisation is an ongoing & continuous process, Indian Railways is poised to become the world's biggest potential market, tipping China, for introduction & deployment of state-of-art technologies & solutions from around the globe. Energy demand of Indian Railways is expected to triple by 2030 to approx. 49 billion units of electricity. Ongoing Decarbonisation of IR needs to be fast-tracked to enable cutting-down India's GHG emissions by 35% by 2030, over 2005 levels. 

The important areas of focus for Modernization of Indian Railways include; semi-high & high speed trains, enhancing overall average speed of  passenger & freight trains, passenger security, safety & comfort, track up gradation, energy-efficient & high hp locomotives, world-class signaling system, heavy-haul & long-haul freight transportation including country-wide spread & port-connected DFCs, enhanced usage of renewable energy in railway operations for conservation of natural resources etc. The Government has taken some key initiatives in this direction and is considering announcement of further key policy initiatives pertaining to network expansion, new infrastructure development & technological up gradation of Indian Railways.
To deliberate on the issues & challenges related to the Modernization of Indian Railways, ASSOCHAM is organizing its Annual National Conference on Modernization of Railways: Vision 2030 at 09:30 A.M. on September 27, 2019Hotel The Leela Palace, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi. The Conference will strive to bring together all concerned stakeholders of the various segments of the Railway Industry to a common platform to discuss and explore the future opportunities and creation of an enabling ecosystem in Indian Railways for Industry Members to work in close-cooperation with IR.
