A gig economy is a work environment, where organizations hire temporary workers or freelancers instead of full time employees. It encompasses all platforms that hire independent contractors, consultants and workers in different sectors. Gig economy gives an employee what they need, flexibility, choice and work life balance. Globally, growth in freelancers is expected to be one of the most significant employment related trends over the next couple of decades.

Indian labour market is also seeing a shift towards gig economy, with an increasing number of workers seeking contractual or freelancing opportunities and services sector is embracing it at the fastest pace. The youth is witnessing the economy from a fresh perspective and identifying fresh needs like employment generation through last mile delivery of goods and services, where several backward and forward linkages through aggregators has resulted in creation of a new supply chain. New needs have opened new vistas for consumption and aligning consumer preferences along with new consumerism. There is a broad consensus among policy makers and academicians that the jobs and income generation avenues of the future will be very different from the traditional and conventional, as the choices of consumers will be different.

Providing sustainable job to millions of youth is a daunting task and the government has undertaken number of steps towards job creation. Regulations relating to benefits for gig employees are definitely advantageous, but most employers may find it difficult to absorb additional cost if any proposed as a social security of employees. Hence, the subject needs a debate on the growth prospects of gig economy in India.
