The Associated Chambers of Commerce & Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) in partnership with Inland waterways Authority of India (IWAI),
is organizing the captioned stakeholders’ interaction on January 24, 2020, at Kochi.

Waterways are the safest and most eco-friendly mode of transport besides being cheapest in terms of freight, compared with roadways and railways.  In Kerala, the west-flowing rivers together with the backwaters are integrated part of the inland navigation system in the state. Kerala's hinterland, through inland waterways, runs parallel to the Arabian Sea and link major trading centers. Congestion in the ports and load on railways and road network could be reduced significantly if bulk cargo such as fertilisers, cement, iron ore, bulk agricultural commodities and project cargo is transshipped onto barges for onward transportation into the hinterland.  Kerala's export-based industries too, can grow considerably if it taps the potential of the State's inland water transport system.  Enhancing competitiveness of the International Container Trans-shipment Terminal (ICTT) at Vallarpadam, will help attract international cargo movement through India, at reduced freight costs, and thus will create future potential for Inland Waterway Transport (IWT). Besides trade prospects, Kerala backwaters offer incomparable beauty and unique experience and has thus contributed to its inclusion in the list of 50 must see places in the world. Kerala back waters offer tremendous tourism and passenger cruise services potential.

The objective of captioned interaction is to promote Inland waterways, coastal shipping for cargo and passenger movement and to discuss strategies to create opportunities in the IWT sector through private investments, policy incentivisation and address related issues of the industry. The interactive session will bring government officials, port authorities, investors, developers, operators, logistics service providers and other key stakeholders on a common platform to engage and exchange perspective and share latest developments, policy updates, market insights and business prospects.
