About Event

We are delighted to inform you that ASSOCHAM is now a Centre of Excellence for Tribal Entrepreneurship development under a three-year project with the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Govt of India to work for the upliftment of our tribal communities.

In wake of this, ASSOCHAM is conducting a webinar titled ‘Khadi: Symbol of independent Atmanirbhar Bharat’to mark the Launch of Tribal Entrepreneurship Development Programme scheduled to be held on October 02, 2020 at 1200 Hrs. the event would commemorate the birth of Mahatma Gandhi and celebrate all that Khadi stands for; upliftment, inclusion and empowerment of our underprivileged, marginalized and impoverished communities. The discussion will focus on the urgency to promote and support entrepreneurship of the tribal communities in the country.

Background

The Tribal population in India represents an enormous diversity of groups with regards to language, linguistic traits, ecological setting, physical attributes, modes of livelihood, level of development etc. This wide heterogeneity poses both opportunities and challenges for their overall socio-economic development. Given the often-remote locations where these tribal populations live, delivering essential services and ensuring they can benefit from economic growth, remains a crucial challenge for the country. Considering that scheduled tribes are almost 20 years behind the average Indian population in terms of their development, the potential of approximately 8 per cent of our population must be fully developed and leveraged. This would optimize their contribution to the growing economy of our country and support India's vision of becoming Atamnirbhar. It is a matter of concern that despite being custodians of unique heritage, skill sets and traditional legacies, the tribal communities are yet to carve a niche for themselves.

In a bid to promote and support entrepreneurship across Indian tribal communities, efforts are underway in connecting agriculture and forest produce with markets using technology, creation of self-help groups, empowering women, and creating self-sustainable enterprises. However, several challenges and bottlenecks are impeding the growth of this process. These include a lack of awareness about tribal heritage and ignorance about the range and diversity of tribal produce across the country.

The ASSOCHAM Centre of Excellence will strive to address these issues, explore avenues of promotion to create a robust tribal brand identity and in the process - build and enhance the entrepreneurial capabilities of the tribal artisans. A differentiated value proposition should help position and develop tribal produce as a unique lifestyle choice and in turn create better livelihood opportunities for tribal artisans.
