Special Economic Zones (SEZs) have been established in many countries as testing grounds for the implementation of liberal market economy. These are also viewed as instruments to enhance the acceptability and the credibility of the transformation policies, to attract domestic and foreign investment and also for the opening up of the economy. Today, there are more than 3,000 SEZs in 120 countries and they account for over US$ 600 Bn in exports and 50 Mn direct jobs.

SEZs in India have tremendously contributed in terms of boosting exports, increasing foreign and domestic investment flows, creation of world class infrastructure and generating of employment opportunities. SEZs have also firmly withstood the worst ever global economic meltdown and have shown great mettle during the crisis. In India, Exports in the current financial year, up to 31.12.2012, have been to the tune of Euro 50.46 Bn (INR 3,53,194.90 crores) registering a growth of about 35.34% over the exports of the corresponding period of FY 2011-12.
