Indian roads have become the predominant mode of transportation of freight cargo. Estimate of the modal movement of cargo highlights that in India nearly 61% of the cargo is moved by road, 30% by rail and rest by airway, pipeline and inland waterways. Freight movement in India is dependent on National Highways. While they constitute only about 2% of Indian road network, they carry nearly 40% of the total traffic. As a result most of these highways are severely congested, resulting in freight traveling only a third of the distance compared to developed countries.

Various estimates put the market size of the Indian logistics sector to be between USD 90-125 billion.  Sources also estimate that the industry employs over 45 million people and is growing at a rate of 15%. The annual logistics cost in India is estimated to be 14% of the GDP, which translates into USD 140 billion and almost 99% of this is accounted for by the unorganized sector and slightly more than 1%, i.e. approximately USD 1.5 billion, is contributed by the organized sector. If India can bring down its logistics cost from 14% to 9% of the GDP i.e. at the level in the US, savings to the tune of USD 50 billion will be realized at the current GDP levels.
