Industrial Relations (IR) in India seems to be in a state of flux. In the western countries, there has been an attempt and a fast growing practice of its integration with other functions of management leading to a comprehensive framework of employee relations. In India no such development appears to have taken place; the IR function in companies had been increasingly relegated to a secondary importance in the companies as well as at the business schools. Ask a manager if he would be comfortable working in IR, the honest response would be negative and similarly ask a student if they wish to take IR as a subject of specialization, the response would be the same. More and more of them would like to get into HRM or HRD. The consequence is obvious. Some managers lack the ability to deal with the groups. Others keep on practicing IR in a reactive manner. IR in many companies, more particularly in the manufacturing sector is far from peaceful. Most IR as well as the HR practitioners admits that it is an alarming trend, as losing sight of IR aspect can lead to a disastrous impact for the company. Therefore, it is an imperative that importance of Industrial Relations is restored to have workplace harmony and uninterrupted growth of the company. It must be also noted that IR’s importance is no less in the non-unionized companies and sectors like the IT, Banking, Aviation, Hospitality, Retail etc.
