India has a long history of trading commodities. The organized futures market in cotton started in 1875 while the futures trading in oilseeds began in 1900. Despite such a long history, commodity futures trading, particularly in agricultural goods, have always remained sensitive issue in India where more than 65 percent of its people are dependent on agriculture for livelihoods.
The key challenge in the market place is to integrate the futures market with the spot market on one end and going forward integrating the Indian marketplace with the global market on the other end. As is obvious, the size, growth and development mandate of the futures market warrant an autonomous and strong regulator. Stronger regulatory framework, as envisaged under FCRA Amendment Bill, is also required to lend authority to FMC to develop strong surveillance prowess as well as to investigate and impose penalty on wrongdoings by market players. Government has taken various initiatives in past few years for developing these markets, yet there is a need to further strengthen the price discovery mechanism and increase the participation of hedgers.
Therefore, with the objective of sensitizing the various stakeholders on the futures trading and to discuss key issues related to the development of Futures market, ASSOCHAM is organizing the “12th Commodity Futures Market Summit & Excellence Awards” at 9.30 a.m. on February 6, 2014 at Hotel Le-Meridien, New Delhi.
