India is at the crossroads of experiencing rapid urbanization in the current decade. Out of  7935 cities and towns in India, there are  495 Urban cities with over 1 Lakh population with employment growth estimated at 25 million by 2020.About 18.76 million additional houses are currently required. Impetus to the Housing Sector in the economy will generate employment opportunities of INR 60,000 Crores. Expediting the under construction real estate projects, including Affordable Housing projects will immediately add INR 160,000 Crores i.e. 35% growth over the current industry turnover. Addressing the Affordable Housing shortage will also create a GDP multiplier, while improving the living standards of Indian citizens.
 
The Government of India has taken several initiatives for affordable housing. However, many important initiatives are further required to provide affordable housing. ASSOCHAM’s considered view is that to help augment the enormous demand-supply gap for affordable housing, properly planned and executed integrated townships fully supported by the Government are definitely the answer to India’s growing housing woes. Integrated township are efficient means of social integration while offering the necessary infrastructure as it saves commuting time and cost of transport thus offering higher level of comfort.
 
With a view to discussing various key aspects and investment opportunities in Affordable Housing, ASSOCHAM is organizing 6th Affordable Housing Summit & Excellence Awards at 9.30 a.m. on 26th February 2014 at Hotel Le Meridien in New Delhi.
