The principal objective of Competition Law is to foster fair competition as an instrument for accelerating economic growth through innovation and economic efficiencies thus maximizing consumer welfare by offering better products and services at most competitive prices. There can be hardly any doubt that a robust competition policy & law will have a positive impact on economic development.
ASSOCHAM had the privilege of organizing a successful International Conference last year. This year has also witnessed some remarkable investigations and decisions by the Competition Commission of India, including a whopping penalty of about Rs 1,800 Crores for the first time on a Public Sector Company, Coal India Ltd. after the Prime Minister’s Speech as well as a controversial Merger Decision in the Jet-Etihad case. This year has also seen a landmark decision by the Competition Appellate Tribunal requiring CCI to impose penalties after due application of mind and also introducing the concept of Relevant Turnover while calculating penalties in appropriate cases. Several matters have now reached the Supreme Court. Turf wars between various Sectoral Regulators and the CCI is also simmering.
Legal Practitioners, Economists, Businesses, the Government, Sectoral Regulators and International Competition agencies are keenly watching these developments.
Under the Chairmanship of Shri Ramji Srinivasan, ASSOCHAM National Council on Competition Law is organizing 2nd International Conference on “Competition Law”, on Saturday, March 8, 2014, at Hotel The Leela, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi.
We are happy to inform you that, The Chairman of Competition Appellate Tribunal, Justice Shri V. S. Sirpurkar as well as the Chairman of The Competition Commission of India, Shri Ashok Chawla have kindly consented to participate in the Inaugural Session.
