ASSOCHAM vows to support PM call for national lockdown; whatever cost it takes

Tuesday, March 24, 2020

New Delhi, 24th March 2020:
ASSOCHAM with a membership of over 4.5 lakh, today vowed to completely support the clarion call given by  ShriNarendraModi for a three-week national lockdown, assuring the Hon'ble Prime Minister that the Indian industry would be an important  part of the national resolve to decisively break the transmission cycle of Coronavirus.

“Given the gravity of the situation, the Prime Minister has taken this tough and unprecedented call, keeping safety of 1.3 billion Indians as the top national priority. We , in the ASSOCHAM, would reach out to our members and all other stakeholders of the society to make this lockdown decision a movement and overcome the global crisis'', said ASSOCHAM Secretary General Mr. Deepak Sood.

He said the Prime Minister was forthcoming in his assertion that 21-day lockdown would involve heavy economic cost. "We in the industry would stand with all our stakeholders - our employees, healthcare services and a huge human resource employed there, customers, bankers and shareholders, " to make India a clear winner in the difficult fight, "whatever it takes".

"We would join the Prime Minister in appealing to our stakeholders to respect the 'LakshmanRekha' at the door step of hourhome  and still be productive . Thankfully, India has achieved a commendable progress in the digital economy , enabling our financial system to remain functional. The work-from-home concept is clearly working well and employees are even putting extra hours , rising up to the occasion," saidMr.Sood.A lot of our supply chain is being managed online.

Despite budgetary constraints and trying to fulfill competing demands, earmarking Rs 15,000 crore exclusively for the healthcare infrastructure for dealing with Caronavirus is a bold decision of the government. '' While the ASSOCHAM top leadership had interacted with the Prime Minister yesterday along with other industry leaders, we have full faith in some of the best brains working in the government , both at the Centre and in states". The Prime Minister has reached out each section of our society, including the private sector industry and trade, for which "we are honoured and would reciprocate in this national endeavour)".
