Reimagining Indian Tourism: Unlocking the Next Wave of Growth

30 Sep 2026

The report, prepared by CBRE Research in collaboration with ASSOCHAM as Knowledge Partner, examines the scale, direction and emerging opportunities in India’s tourism sector. It highlights the sector’s growing economic contribution, supported by strong domestic travel, recovering international arrivals, improving connectivity and expanding hospitality infrastructure. The report identifies a shift from traditional tourism circuits towards integrated, destination-led tourism ecosystems, with growing opportunities in pilgrimage, heritage, wellness, medical tourism, MICE, destination weddings and experiential travel. It also reviews national initiatives including Swadesh Darshan 2.0, PRASHAD and Dekho Apna Desh, alongside digital tourism platforms and state-level tourism policies. Infrastructure development across airports, expressways, railways, ropeways and waterways is identified as an important enabler of tourism growth and the development of emerging destinations. The report further highlights the need to strengthen hospitality capacity, workforce skills, private investment, ease of doing business and digital visitor services. Sustainable destination management, carrying capacity and local participation are identified as critical to ensuring long-term growth. Its recommendations call for coordinated action by government and industry to strengthen destinations, accessibility, visitor experience, investment and regional economic development.
