India is home to 1,531 operating mines and produces 95 minerals, including 4 fuel minerals, 10 metallic minerals, 23 non-metallic minerals, 3 atomic minerals, and 55 minor minerals. The mining and minerals sector plays a vital role in supporting infrastructure development, manufacturing, energy security, and the overall growth of the Indian economy. With significant reserves of iron ore, bauxite, coal, and other critical minerals, India offers substantial investment opportunities and long-term growth potential.

The sector is undergoing a transformative phase, driven by initiatives such as Make in India, the National Infrastructure Pipeline (NIP), the National Mineral Policy 2019, and the Mineral Laws (Amendment) Act, 2020, which aim to strengthen Ease of Doing Business, improve transparency, enhance regulatory frameworks, and promote sustainable and balanced socio-economic development. These reforms are expected to accelerate exploration, increase mining capacities, and encourage private sector participation across the mining value chain.

The ASSOCHAM National Council on Mines & Minerals serves as a leading Industry Policy Forum, addressing national and global issues of strategic importance to the sector. The Council works closely with the Central and State Governments, regulatory authorities, and industry stakeholders to advance public policy, advocate regulatory reforms, and support sustainable mining practices. Through policy advocacy, stakeholder consultations, conferences, and knowledge-sharing initiatives, the Council contributes to strengthening the mining ecosystem, enhancing business competitiveness, and supporting India's long-term economic growth.
