Globally, Special Economic Zones (SEZs) have been established as engines of economic growth and testing grounds for market-oriented reforms. They serve as important instruments for attracting domestic and foreign investment, promoting global trade, enhancing export competitiveness, and supporting industrial development. In India, over 240 operational SEZs, spanning approximately 40,000 hectares of developed infrastructure with around 22,000 hectares of land available for future development, have played a significant role in export promotion, investment generation, world-class infrastructure development, and employment creation.

Across India, most States have established SEZs to promote manufacturing and service sector investments. Supported by a competitive workforce, improving infrastructure, and continuous Ease of Doing Business reforms, India offers an attractive destination for domestic and international investors. In addition to Central Government initiatives, State Governments provide a range of incentives to encourage industrial development and investment opportunities.

The ASSOCHAM National Council on SEZs, Industrial Parks & Warehousing serves as a leading Industry Policy Forum, working closely with the Central and State Governments to address public policy, regulatory reforms, and sectoral challenges. Through policy advocacy, stakeholder engagement, and industry–government collaboration, the Council promotes a business-friendly environment, strengthens investment linkages between domestic and global industry, and supports Make in India, infrastructure development, and India's long-term economic growth.
